Ms Marvel Issue 06 review

Ms. Marvel is my new jail-bait-but-its-ok-she’s-fictional crush.

I started reading the new series and new heroine, Kamala, with issue 03. The first set of stories told her gaining her power, starting her journey towards being a hero, and getting her costume. Having established her origin, we jump into the adventure more with a new storyline in issue 6, and my love for Kamala and the Ms. Marvel series has been cemented.

Besides being an energetic, enthusiastic, wants-to-do-good-with-her-powers young woman, Kamala is also a big ol’ geek and I love her for it.

She’s into D&D (she threw out not just one but multiple D&D references), she’s into memes (she did a “doge” style narration. Wow! Much awesome!), and she writes fanfiction (my only complaint is that she writes fanfiction of, what is in her world, real people, and I don’t think it’s cool to write about real, living people, but that’s a minor point in a fictional world where my heroine writes fanfiction.). She fangirls over meeting Wolverine. It’s so freaking adorable.

So um, yeah, enough gushing, what is the story about? Well, Kamala has recently rescued the brother of a friend who had gotten himself mixed in with a cult-like group who answers to the Inventor. Now the Inventor has been sending out bots after Ms. Marvel. Kamala has so far been able to defeat them, but they are getting smarter and stronger along the way. She notices a gaping hole in the street leading into the sewers that has some strange animal growls coming from it, so she dons her costume to investigate, where she first meets a holographic projection of her new nemesis the Inventor, before she runs into Wolverine who is hunting for a missing mutant student. The two team up as they investigate the sewers and it is fabulous.

I am loving the story and character so much. I greatly recommend this series, and issue 06 is a fine place to jump in on it.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

I watched from day 1 and never gave it up like many did.  The show didn’t blow me away like Lost, but I found it fun and entertaining.  And May and Coulson are so freaking awesome.

The show really took off in the second half, particularly leading up to, through, and after the Captain America tie in, and the season finale was fabulous.

I am so looking forward to season 2!

What did You Eat Yesterday vol 1

By Yoshinaga Fumi, published by Vertical

Yoshinaga Fumi is known for her BL (Boys Love) books, and while this series does feature a gay couple, it’s Food Porn not BL Porn.  Well, half of her series are general slice-of-life drama that just happen to have gay characters in it rather than strictly BL, and those tend to be my favorites of hers anyway.

What did you eat yesterday features Shiro Kakei, a narcissistic lawyer and his lover Kenji Yabuki, a more openly out hair stylist.  Shiro’s hobby is cooking, and each chapter spends a fair number of pages intimately covering his cooking.

The art is lovely and clean.  Backgrounds are a bit sparse, but generally gives enough to establish setting.  Shiro looks a bit like her typical leading guy, but Kenji has a bit of a different look for her.   Food looks delicious.

I liked the characters and the look at their life, but I found myself skipping over the description of the food preparation.  I like her work in general and I want to support her work so more will get translated over, I’m not certain this is a series I can really get into.
