Li's Katsucon 2006 Convention Report

This was my first time at Katsucon, and the first time going to a con without Akiko at all. (CTcon 2005 she came for the last day). So I figured I was 'scooping' it out for her. My friend from college, Santineao, did join me, however.

Shout outs go to the usual gang: Mookie (sorry I didn't make vegan muffins this time, but I do still have your pencil), Hawk, Ananth, and Katie from The Applegeeks (you guys are awesome as always), Shawn from Staccato (thanks for the cool poster!), Dave Lister from Paradox Lost (Always such a sweety!) , Matt and Brianna from Connecticon (great to see you guys as always), Barb and Chris from Fragile Gravity (who are so incredibly nice!!!), Trish and Damien from Novablade/Mine's Bigger (at every con that we are at together, our tables are always next to each other!), the Garth, Larom, and William "Bob" from com.e.dit.y (Thanks so William for your help in my bday fun), Brian of Hookie Dookie Panic, (can't wait for cosplay chess again this year!) Onezumi (yay for candy!), Sketch and Jim from Morlock Enterprices (GREEN!) and more. Always great seeing these people (and adding more to my list of cool people to talk with at cons).

Friday

I woke early, T'eao a bit later as she had gotten so little sleep the night before. I reprised last year's Akabane cosplay, since it's a fun an easy costume. We got our crap together, our lovely hostess 'mothering' us to make certain we had everything we needed and a little food to pack with us and even made certain we got to the hotel alright. We rode the metro to the con center. (panda panda panda panda panda panda Metro! Metro! panda panda pandapanda panda panda Metro! Metro!--just think Badgers there and you'll know how the tune goes)

It was pretty easy to find the hotel-just had to follow the cosplayed people! It took a bit of time to find where registration was, and we had to wait a little bit (but nothing like Otakon!) then we made our way to the Artist Alley. I didn't get a spot, so I was sharing a half table spot with T'eao (so we each got a quarter of a table.) Next to us was a very nice girl selling hats that she made.

I popped out for a while during the afternoon to say hi to the usual gang, and wandered around the con center for a bit. Went into the dealers room, but didn't explore it all. Mostly, I found volume one of Haru o Daite Ita so I can have that signed next weekend by Youka Nitta at the NY comic con. (Yay for gorgeous smut!)

Carrie, our neighbor in the artist alley, left the alley around 5ish, so she let me spread over into her space. I spent the rest of the evening selling prints.Much fun.

We left the con around 11ish, got home and pretty quickly went to bed.

Saturday

I again woke early, and again T'eao did not. Again I wore my Akabane cosplay. Our lovely host did make us breakfast, which was fabulous, and we made our way off to the con like a herd of turtles.

Carrie was busy with masquerade events, so I was able to stay in her part of the table, and started drawing chibi portrait commissions. I was most excited to find that there were some people who reconginzed the figure I had drawn in my commissions sign. That made it worth while!

It was really busy in the early afternoon, slowed to nothing for most of the afternoon, than picked up again at dinner time. I was planning on going to the masquerade, but wound up staying since I was getting people wanting chibi portraits. Stayed late in the Alley, to the point where most others had left. Anyway, a guy was going through the artist alley late saturday, and when he saw my stuff was still there, since most of the others had gone, he stopped by and flipped through. He introduced himself to me as "Greg", and as he was leaving, i realized who he was (ie, the voice actor. I didn't recognize him at first because last time I saw him his hair was purple!) so ran after him with the comic binder and showed him the Tiffany Grant comics, and told him she had read it as well, and he was amused by that.

Anyway, went back to chatting with Sketch--playing with his sword, looking at the 'ooo shiney!' lighter, ect--until late, to the point where T'eao and I realized we would have to leave NOW if we were going to make the last metro train.

As we were leaving, we met up with the Demon Lord and his lovely Lady, a couple Teao and I had talked with a couple times earlier already, who had just left the rave. They invited us up for some drinks, so we made our way to their room and hung out for a hour or two. It was entirely too much fun, but that is a story for another time. "But seriously, do you have poker?"

T'eao and I took a cab back, and crashed. Well, I only slept for 2 hours, T'eao an hour longer.

Sunday

It was my one hundred and eleventh birthday! I turned elevenity-one!

Instead of Akabane, I decided to do 'bondage kitty', but I couldn't get my hair to cooperate, so I just wore the bondage pants and shirt and chains without the kitty ears and tail. To finish my outfit, the Demon Lord came by in the morning and tied me up with some Japanese bondage knots. It looked pretty hot, I thought, and it wasn't really uncomfortable. (Though it got a bit a couple hours later)

Carrie was next to us when we got there, and was able to sell most of her stock. She closed up shop early again, so I moved back over to her spot. Still, I didn't wind up selling anything.

T'eao disappeared for an hour or so, evilly plotting birthday embarrassment with William's help. Yes, if you were at the Artist Alley at around 1:30 on Sunday, I was the girl in the back of the room for whom it was announced it was my birthday. And yes, the entire Artist Alley did indeed sing the "happy birthday" song.

I got art from several people during the day as presents... a gorgeous chain mail necklace from my cousin, a 'little yaoi' pic from Majik, a silly button from Brian, a poster from Shawn, a very well-drawn smutty pic from Trish... it was really great!

Staying until the end of the con, T'eao and I went had dinner with our lovely hosts, took a quick power nap, then packed up and started back to T'eao's place.

I HATE city driving, as we wound up getting slightly lost. We could see WHERE we were supposed to be, but just couldn't get there from where we were. A slight detour into the next state over, we finally got back to her place just as my birthday ended.

Conclussion:

I had a fabulous time, very little sleep, and no time really to recover before I do it all again this upcoming weekend for New York Comic Con.

Missed having Akiko with me, but I think we shall definitely add this to our list of cons next year!
