Animazement 2003 Con Report

Although Akiko has lived down south for several years, this was the first year we decided to go to Animazement. Unfortunately, after preregistering, Akiko learned she had to have foot surgery, which would place her on crutches for the convention. The idea of not going to the con didn't even cross her mind, instead, the thinking revolved around which character it would make the most sense to cosplay as, given that it was likely she was going to need a wheelchair to get around the convention. The most logical choice for a character was the very injured Rei Ayanami (plug suit), and Li had the brilliant idea to include her IV as part of the costume. Li debuted her full Kamikaze Kaitoh Jeanne costume.

The following brief con report is modeled after the VSD of Cassie Claire, for absolutely no reason other than I (Akiko) had not had a lot of sleep when I began working on this con report, and it amused me (and Li too, since she helped write this). Please also check out the Full Report as well.

Day One
Got to convention - rain and traffic before arrival sucked, but no registration line definite plus. Met cool InuYasha. Suspect he was stalking us. Wheelchair pain in the ass to move in the crowds, but magical powers granted means to no-line access to AMV contest.

Day Two
Spent day in Artist Alley. Made money. V. good. Aki's Rei costume talk of con. (go us!) Found fanboys hard to dodge in wheelchair. V. annoying. Met other cosplayers. Suspect their costumes better than ours.

Day Three
Spent day in Alley. Hung out with fans. Scared any orcs away with evil laughter. Rei costume complimented by Ms Grant (go us!). Drive overnight bad for back.

Con Wrap-Up:
Animazement was a fun con. The smaller size compared to Otakon was a definitely plus in that you actually got to meet some of the other Congoers, and we made money, so we really can't complain too much *grin*. The Wheelchair was a big pain, particularly in the dealers room, which I really couldn't handle, any time there was any sort of crowd, and in the Auditorium and other parts of the convention, but got us into the reserved seating, and the synergy between the wheelchair and the costume really worked well.
