"Anime Boston ('08)" :: Posted 03/25/2008

Thank you all for a wonderful Anime Boston this year. Li and I did really well this year, selling out of all but 1 of our traditional paintings! It was so exciting that they were so well received. It was great hearing too about people who'd bought them last year and had them hanging in their homes. It was fun too being recognized from other conventions - we're really starting to build our 'comiku girls' brand name up a bit.

Our panels on Friday were both really successful. After finding ways to make Tea Ceremony work despite Hynes Convention Center regulations, we were scheduled in the largest panel room which seated about 700+ people. I'm guessing we probably had a good couple hundred. We actually had to use microphones! Our tech guy was very sweet and made sure we didn't look like idiots doing that. What was more fun was when we walked up to the panel room to start setting up - there was a LINE at the door WAITING for OUR PANEL :). And the life drawing panel went well too. Next year we'll bring a spotlight for more dramatic lighting, but we were nervous about who would come to the panel (fanboys) instead - it was a great group of artists. It was also the quietest panel we've ever run because everyone was so engrossed in drawing.

Anime Boston is one of our 'home' conventions, but this year was made even moreso by the fact that the lovely Nikki placed many of us who go to Bakaretsukon together in the Artist's Alley - so in a row we had Brendan (Chained Visions) and Teague (Mr Button) and then Jody with all her various pieces, then the ever charming Lu and her husband (Crappy Little Comic) and then half a table from them was our table. So it was very comfortable hanging out behind the table with these people for the weekend, which always makes being in the alley more fun. It was made even better when we found out Bakaretsukon had already listed us as confirmed guests for the convention this year - and THEN stopped by the table to make sure we really were up for it :) A clear sign they are as happy with us as we are to come to their con. Plus our hotel room is already booked for the weekend :).

Shout outs also have to continue for our other artist friends who we never get to hang out with as much as we want despite always being at cons together. Although we did get to hang out with Damien (Novablade Studios) before opening on Saturday (yea for waking up early!). I remember meeting him at our first Artist Ally in Otakon YEARS ago (of course he was hard to miss being that he was dressed up like a Drow Elf Warrior). Mookie is of course ever charming and it was reassuring that he was able to get out of the snow that trapped us all in Buffalo with a cancelled convention. The scruff however burns - its just at the point where its long enough to hurt, not long enough to be soft... Dave Lister is as always one of the most unquestionably sweet men we've met and continues to be. He was across the aisle from us this year so we were able to make faces at him :). And Brian Wilson and us were able to trade insults all weekend as well. Apparently small hats offend him. Short men offend me. But I got an awesome surfing guinea pig out of the deal when he threw it at me in order to harass Chris from Blue and Blond. It was great to meet and finally get a chance to talk to Chris, as I know we've done cons together before and he's simply fun. (Anyone who comes up with surfing guinea pigs has to be). I'll have to take some pictures of my guinea pig. She's soo cute!

Plus I need to get off my ass and redo our links page to get Blue and Blond up there. Plus everyone should check out Fortune Memories. The art is lovely and the artist, Linda was incredibly sweet when I was having extreme blonde moments this weekend (and I'm not even the Blonde Comiku Girl!) and couldn't promise to remember to link her comic. So she was kind enough to email me to remind her and her work is lovely. She has a very painterly style of greyscale coloring which I like.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves. =^-^= And it was a lot of fun meeting you and your partner in mischief. I'd have stuck around more but I didn't want to be a bother.

I hope to see you at ConnectiCon. :)

Right, a bother. Like that is likely :P

It's been known to happen from time to time. ^^;; I sometimes start talking people's ears off talking comic-shop.

I'm sorry I didn't go on Friday (though the 10-hour wait sounds horrific) to hear your seminars. I hope someone taped them and they can be hosted somewhere. It sounds like they were rather enjoyable. Do you have any others planned for other cons?

What's the con schedule like for the rest of the Spring anyway? Sadly I can't find any centralized databases listing them all.

http://www.animecons.com/ is a good list of conventions. The Comiku Girls however are probably not doing another con until Connecticon and after that Bakaretsukon. We'll be doing panels at both of those conventions as well, its just not clear which ones (although Tea Ceremony is almost always on the schedule).

Ahhhh! Dave was across from us and I didn't know this?!

The Gods. . . They do not smile upon me. . .

My bad really. . . I think I gave up on Paradox Lost a while ago for some reason, but I don't remember why. . . So I didn't recognize the art. But I should always recognize the name (Red Dwarf, ya know?).

I will have to keep that in mind for next year. Get out and actually meet my neighbors!
